Zelensky criticizes Trump’s easing of Russian sanctions

Zelensky Rejects U.S. Decision to Lift Sanctions on Russian Oil

Kyiv – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticized the U.S. decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian oil already en route to international markets.

The move, announced Friday by the U.S. Treasury Department, permits the delivery and sale of previously sanctioned Russian refined oil at sea, intended to mitigate rising global energy prices linked to the situation in Iran. According to reports from Telegrafi, the exemption allows for the continued transport of over 12 million tons of Russian oil, currently being shipped by more than 110 tankers within the Russian fleet.

Zelensky asserted that “every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war” being waged by Moscow against Ukraine. He stated that this revised policy would significantly bolster Russia’s budget, potentially adding approximately $10 billion. The Ukrainian president emphasized the ongoing threat posed by the substantial volume of Russian oil being transported, highlighting the continued reliance on these resources to fund the conflict.

The decision underscores the ongoing debate regarding sanctions policy and its impact on supporting Russia’s military operations.
