Ridvan Slivova recalls through photographs the march of women in March 1998: “Food for Drenica.”

Photographer Ridvan Slivova of Telegrafi has recently highlighted a pivotal moment in Kosovan civil defiance, marking 28 years since the event. He shared images from the women’s procession to Drenica, released on social media on March 16, 1998. During a period of intense unrest, hundreds of Albanian women undertook a peaceful journey towards Drenica to provide assistance to those trapped within.

This action, dubbed “Bread for Drenica,” stands as one of the most crucial instances of solidarity and resistance. The march was initiated as a humanitarian endeavor, uniting women from across Kosovo who sought to support their families and loved ones. They aimed to deliver supplies to the residents of Drenica, a location under siege.

However, the procession was abruptly stopped by Serbian police at the entrance to Fushe-Kosova, effectively preventing the continuation of the march. The leading group of women, at the head of the column, were unable to proceed further. This event remains a powerful symbol of the courage and determination displayed by the women of Kosovo during a time of conflict.
