Experiencing frequent awakenings during the night can be disruptive and, for some, may indicate underlying issues. According to experts, regular nighttime disturbances, particularly those occurring around 3 a.m., can have significant consequences for both mental and physical well-being. Talar Moukhtarian, an assistant professor of mental health at Warwick Medical School, notes that the typical sleep cycle involves multiple brief awakenings throughout the night that individuals often don’t recall.
However, sustained periods of wakefulness disrupt crucial stages of sleep, impacting restorative processes. Moukhtarian explains that these disruptions can interfere with the natural rhythm of sleep, potentially contributing to difficulties falling back asleep. The consistent wake during the night can negatively affect the mental state.
“It’s important to recognize that frequent nighttime awakenings warrant attention,” Moukhtarian stated. “Addressing the root cause of these disturbances is key to improving sleep quality and overall health.”
