LSDM to Introduce Amendments to Draft Citizenship Law
Skopje – The leader of the LSDM (Internal Democratic Alliance), Venko Filipçe, addressed a press conference today, expressing concerns regarding the draft law on citizenship. Filipçe asserted that the draft contains insufficient clarity and ambiguities, particularly concerning its practical implementation. Speaking on the matter, Filipçe stated that the LSDM intends to intervene with proposed amendments to the legal solution.
He criticized the government’s approach, noting that the draft stipulates deputies cannot hold dual citizenship. However, he emphasized the lack of explicit detail regarding the application of this provision to the current parliamentary makeup. “A classic deception by the government,” Filipçe stated.
“A Law on Citizenship is proposed for deputies, and it is stated, proposed, that deputies cannot have dual citizenship. And that is good. But nowhere is it clearly stated that this will also apply to this current parliamentary composition.”
Despite these reservations, the LSDM has indicated its intention to support the law.
The party plans to submit amendments to guarantee that the provisions regarding dual citizenship will comprehensively apply to all current members of parliament. The LSDM’s intervention focuses on ensuring the consistent application of the citizenship law. The future of the draft citizenship law remains subject to further debate and potential amendments.
