U.S. Ambassador Urges Serbia to Prioritize Western Alignment in Security Strategy
Belgrade, Serbia – U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, delivered a clear message to Serbia regarding its approach to defense and security collaborations, emphasizing the importance of aligning with Western partners.
Whitaker stated that Serbia should avoid cooperation with “unreliable partners,” according to a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on April 23rd. The ambassador’s comments followed a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade the previous day. Whitaker noted that he conveyed this guidance directly to the President, highlighting the critical role of strategic partnerships in ensuring security.
“Security depends on choosing the right partners,” Whitaker wrote. Serbia’s stance has remained notable since the commencement of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine less than four years ago. The country has not implemented sanctions directed at Moscow and continues to maintain political relationships with Russian officials.
Whitaker’s remarks underscore the ongoing diplomatic efforts to encourage Serbia to adopt a strategy aligned with Western perspectives. The ambassador’s meeting with President Vučić represents a key element in these discussions surrounding Serbia’s future engagement with international partners.
