Siljanovska-Davkova: There is no good parliament without a respected opposition.

RSM President Emphasizes Importance of Opposition in Democratic Process

Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, President of North Macedonia, addressed the 20th Conference of Speakers of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative Parliament in Skopje, highlighting the critical role of a respected opposition within a functioning democracy. Speaking at the event, Siljanovska emphasized that the government’s actions in supporting the opposition are, fundamentally, a defense of itself. “I have repeatedly stated that a good parliament requires a robust and respected opposition,” she explained.

“The government must recognize that by defending the opposition, it inherently safeguards its own potential to become part of that opposition within a democratic framework.”

Siljanovska advocated for increased transparency in the legislative process, specifically referencing the need for three readings of proposed laws and comprehensive stakeholder involvement. She stressed the importance of incorporating input from the non-governmental sector to ensure decisions reflect genuine majority rule. “My focus is on ensuring majority rule isn’t the only method for decision-making,” Siljanovska concluded, underlining the need for a collaborative and inclusive approach within the parliament.
