Kosovo improves its ranking in the Reporter Without Borders Index following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the KPS law.

Kosovo Ranks Higher in Global Media Freedom Index Following Regulatory Reforms

PRISTINA, Kosovo – The Kosovo Journalists’ Association announced Thursday that Kosovo has risen in the annual Reporters Without Borders Media Freedom Index, marking a positive shift following a significant decline in the previous year. Kosovo now holds the 84th position globally, achieving a score of 55.89 – an increase of three points compared to 2023. The report highlights key developments impacting the media landscape in Kosovo.

It notes the recent legislative reform of the Independent Media Commission (KPM), which was subsequently deemed unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court. The Court’s actions, addressing cases involving journalists, are recognized as a priority. Furthermore, the report emphasizes the ongoing challenges faced by journalists, including a persistent issue of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) lawsuits initiated by business groups and political actors.

Despite these continued political attacks, journalists in Kosovo are reportedly maintaining their work. The annual index underscores the importance of safeguarding media freedom and the continued efforts to ensure journalists can operate without fear of reprisal within the Kosovo media sector. The report’s findings reflect a renewed focus on supporting independent media and protecting freedom of expression.
