North Macedonia Drops in Press Freedom Index

North Macedonia has been assessed as having a “problematic situation” regarding media freedom, according to LSDM leader Venko Filipçe. The country has reportedly fallen three positions in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index. Filipçe attributed the decline to the current government led by Prime Minister Dimitar Kovačevski, formerly Mickoski.

He stated, “With Mickoski, North Macedonia has fallen 3 places in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index. Now we are in the group of countries with a ‘problematic situation.’”

The LSDM leader further suggested external influence, alleging a role for the media network associated with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in shaping the assessment. He argued this represents a fulfillment of a key reform objective for the European Union concerning media freedom.

Filipçe emphasized a shift towards greater transparency and accountability, stating, “The time of truth is coming.”

The Reporters Without Borders Index evaluates countries based on various factors including threats to journalists, censorship, and the overall level of press freedom. This latest ranking reflects ongoing concerns regarding the state of media independence within north macedonia.
