Kosovo Ranks Higher in Media Freedom Index Following Legal Ruling
Kosovo has seen an improvement in its standing within the annual Media Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders. As of this week’s report, Kosovo is ranked 84th globally, achieving 55.89 points – an increase of three points compared to the previous year. The advancement is attributed to a significant legal development: the Constitutional Court of Kosovo declared the Law for the Media Council unconstitutional.
The report highlights the problematic nature of the previously ineffective Independent Media Commission (KPM), noting that legislative reform addressing it was ultimately deemed invalid by the court. Recognizing the court’s role in safeguarding media freedom, the report specifically acknowledges its prioritization of cases involving journalists. This decision represents a key factor in Kosovo’s improved ranking within the international index.
The ongoing efforts to strengthen media freedom within Kosovo are being monitored closely, with the court’s actions signaling a commitment to ensuring media freedom. The index assesses the environment for journalists worldwide, and this change reflects a positive step for press rights in the region.
