Environmental organizations are reacting: Under the new mining law in the RMV, the company receives permission to mine before purchasing the land.

Environmental Organizations Express Strong Concerns Over Amended Mineral Resources Law

Environmental organizations are strongly reacting to the recent approval of changes to the Mineral Resources Law, citing significant legal uncertainties and potential conflicts regarding private property rights. The amendments, they argue, permit concessionaires to secure exploitation permits prior to the completion of the expropriation process. Numerous environmental groups have voiced their alarm, highlighting the potential ramifications for natural resources, human health, and the well-being of communities impacted by exploration and geological activities.

Critics argue the expedited approval process is deeply concerning and fundamentally undermines safeguards related to these critical areas. Despite raising the issue with 49 environmental organizations and submitting a comprehensive 1,000 amendment proposal from “The Left,” alongside requests from SDSM and RDM for a withdrawal, the changes were ultimately approved. The organizations maintain that the decision represents a serious disregard for public concerns and the long-term consequences associated with resource management.

The approval has ignited debate surrounding the legal framework governing mineral resource exploitation and its potential impact on vulnerable populations and the environment.
