How does politics treat the work of journalists in Kosovo

Kosovo’s Progress in Press Freedom Index Recognized, But Further Improvements Needed

Kosovo’s recent advancement in the World Press Freedom Index has been noted as a positive development, but experts emphasize the need for sustained efforts to elevate the country’s ranking, according to media policy advisor Jeton Mehmeti. Radio Free Europe’s “5 Questions” podcast featured Mehmeti’s assessment of the latest results. In the 2026 index, Kosovo secured 84th place out of 180 countries, representing a 15-place increase from the prior year.

This improvement reflects ongoing developments within the nation. However, Mehmeti highlighted that the index’s methodology presents a key challenge. “In such indices, Kosovo is measured by itself, not by other countries,” Mehmeti explained.

“It is measured by its own democratic aspirations, measured by its orientation towards European goals, namely by basing itself on the model and standards of the Council of Europe and the European Union.”

One of the primary concerns, according to Mehmeti, remains the need for continued progress in ensuring the full protection of journalistic freedoms and independence within Kosovo. The ranking serves as a benchmark for assessing the country’s commitment to democratic values and its alignment with European norms.
