Palatova: Progress in Kosovo’s freedom of the media is maintained by public officials and the political establishment

Kosovo’s Media Freedom Progress Requires Continued Support, Says EU Representative

Kosovo has demonstrated progress in media freedom, achieving a 15th-place improvement in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, ranking 84th as of May 3, 2026. The advancement reflects ongoing efforts to bolster journalistic independence within the country. EU Special Representative to Kosovo, Eva Palatova, emphasized the importance of sustaining this progress.

She stated that the rise represents a positive development and requires a concerted effort from Kosovo’s public officials and the political establishment. “It is encouraging to see Kosovo rise 15 places,” Palatova wrote on X. “This progress now needs to be preserved by public officials and the political establishment, who share responsibility for ensuring an environment that allows the functioning of the media.”

The EU has committed to supporting these efforts.

Maintaining a robust environment for media freedom remains a key priority for the European Union’s engagement in Kosovo. The continued advancement underscores the importance of safeguarding freedom of the press within the country. Further action is needed to solidify this progress and ensure its long-term sustainability.
