The State Prosecutor’s Office requests the urgent announcement of a competition for the new State Prosecutor.

The Kosovo Justice Institute (IKD) has formally asked the Kosovo Prosecutors’ Council to initiate a new contest for the selection of the State Prosecutor without delay. The IKD contends that Kosovo has operated without a consistently appointed state prosecutor for the preceding four years. Senior researcher Gzim Shala, speaking with Ekonomia Online, emphasized that despite recent reforms to the Kosovo Prosecutors’ Council and the establishment of a viable membership for operation under the revised structure, the procedure for electing the State Prosecutor remains undeveloped.

This situation began following the return of the decision by the President of the Republic of Kosovo to the Kosovo Prosecutors’ Council in November 2023. Shala highlighted the critical issue: “Currently, it has been four years since Kosovo has been without a State Prosecutor.” He underscored the urgency of addressing this prolonged absence of a designated state prosecutor. The lack of a permanent state prosecutor has created a significant gap in the legal framework.

The IKD’s request underscores the importance of establishing a clear process for appointing the State Prosecutor, ensuring the effective functioning of the justice system within Kosovo. The institute believes a swift resolution is necessary to restore stability and accountability within the state’s prosecutorial office.
