Bulgarian MEPs warn Parliament: Waitz report on North Macedonia creates dangerous precedents

European Meps Raise Concerns Over North Macedonia Report

Brussels – European Parliament rapporteur Thomas Waitz has proposed amendments to a report concerning North Macedonia that have prompted significant concern among several Bulgarian MEPs. The proposed changes, as outlined in the report, reportedly raise questions regarding fundamental principles of the European Parliament and establish potentially dangerous precedents. Specifically, the wording within the report is described as undermining the policies established during the negotiating framework between the EU and North Macedonia.

According to “BGNES,” Bulgarian MEPs Ivaylo Valchev, representing the European Conservative and Reform Party, and Stanislav Stoyanov, affiliated with the Group of Sovereign European States, communicated these reservations directly to Mr. Waitz. This position is supported by all Bulgarian representatives within the European Parliament, who collectively expressed their concerns in a letter addressed to Mr.

Waitz, along with rapporteurs, political coordinators, and group leaders. Valchev and Stoyanov highlighted the importance of maintaining “key issues and red lines” within the negotiation process. The letter indicates a broad consensus among Bulgarian MEPs regarding the need for careful consideration of the proposed amendments to ensure alignment with established European Union policy.

Further developments are anticipated as discussions continue within the European Parliament.
