Von der Leyen Reaffirms EU-US Trade Agreement Amid Tariff Concerns
Brussels – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed concerns regarding a potential escalation of trade tensions with the United States on Tuesday, following President Trump’s recent threat to increase tariffs on European-made automobiles. Speaking in Armenia, von der Leyen reiterated the fundamental nature of the existing trade relationship. “An agreement is an agreement and we have an agreement,” she stated.
“And the essence of this agreement is prosperity, common rules and trust.” The Commission President’s comments come in response to President Trump’s assertion last week that existing 15% tariffs on EU car imports were a result of a lack of respect for established trade rules. The United States is currently subject to a legal ceiling limiting its ability to unilaterally raise tariffs. Von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s commitment to achieving mutual benefit and fostering cooperation through the established framework.
“We want to achieve mutual benefit, cooperation and trust from this matter,” she added. The situation highlights ongoing disagreements regarding trade practices and underscores the importance of upholding the terms of the existing agreement. Further negotiations are expected as both sides seek to address concerns and maintain stability within the transatlantic trade relationship.
