ECOPANA Releases Documentary Highlighting River Obstruction in Kosovo’s White Drin Basin

Prishtina, Kosovo – Environmental organization ECOPANA has released a short documentary video examining the condition of the rivers within the White Drin basin, prompting calls for urgent restoration efforts. The documentary, part of the “Kosovo’s Path to Free-Flowing Rivers: Foundational Inventory for the White Drin Dam Removal” project, focuses on the detrimental impact of small dams, deteriorated barriers, and other physical interventions on the region’s aquatic ecosystems. The project, funded by the Open Rivers Programme, aims to systematically document the extent of these obstructions.

ECOPANA reports that 142 artificial barriers are currently blocking the flow of six rivers within the basin. The documentary’s title, “Concrete today, fish tomorrow,” reflects concerns about the long-term consequences of these developments. “Ecopana” conducted the first comprehensive inventory of these barriers, highlighting the significant disruption to natural river flows.

Salihu, representing ECOPANA, stated that the organization is seeking immediate action to restore the rivers and address the potential for a water crisis in Kosovo. The initiative underscores the importance of maintaining free-flowing rivers for ecological health and sustainable water resources. The documentary’s release marks a key step in the project’s goal of facilitating the removal of these barriers and ultimately restoring the White Drin’s natural flow.
