Nine Miners Die in Colombia Coal Mine Explosion

An explosion at the Carbonera Los Pinos coal mine in Sutatausa, Colombia, resulted in nine fatalities and six injuries yesterday. The incident occurred at the mine, located approximately 80 kilometers north of Bogota, in the country’s central region. According to officials from the province of Cundinamarca, around 15 miners were present at the time of the explosion.

Three miners managed to escape the mine independently, while three others were successfully rescued. Emergency responders worked to secure the site and provide medical attention to the injured. The Colombian National Mining Agency reported that inspectors had conducted a visit to the mine at the beginning of April.

Their assessment identified a buildup of dangerous gases, including methane, within unused areas, leading to a recommendation for closure. The agency extended condolences to the families of the deceased miners and acknowledged the intervention that saved six individuals from the mine. Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns within the Colombian mining sector.
