The past year has seen a tragic trend continue, with twelve workers losing their lives while at work, predominantly within the construction sector. A concerning pattern has emerged, with eleven of these deaths occurring specifically in this hazardous industry. Over the preceding eight years, more than 160 individuals have tragically suffered fatal outcomes due to workplace incidents.
This sector is consistently recognized as the most perilous for worker safety, a fact underscored by the ongoing loss of life. Contributing to this dangerous situation is a lack of adherence to legal regulations and insufficient protective measures. Consequently, the Labor Inspectorate has levied over 1,700 fines, reflecting the widespread non-compliance.
Year after year, numerous workers continue to die at their workplaces in Kosovo, a persistent and deeply troubling issue. In 2025 alone, nineteen fatal incidents were recorded, eleven of which were occurring within the construction industry. Despite ongoing attempts to enhance safety standards and improve working conditions, the construction sector and other industrial fields remain among the most dangerous environments for worker safety and, ultimately, for life.
The current director of the Labor Inspectorate acknowledges the severity of the situation and the need for sustained action to address these preventable tragedies.
