The pyramid scheme of concrete: How the wealthy Albanian businessman is saving money in the “low-cost” tourism sector.

The Albanian Tax Administration has presented compelling data, challenging the widespread perception of Albanian tourism as a significant economic resource. Recent actions demonstrate that the industry is largely a promotional tool, as previously suggested. Through accessing Booking data to address property owners engaged in short-term rentals, the tax authorities exposed a significant financial dynamic.

This initiative was accompanied by an infographic detailing the activity of 17,225 properties during a nine-month period. These properties generated a total of €80,122,524 in bookings. However, a substantial portion, €12,858,044, was allocated as commissions to the Booking platform.

The revelation, stemming from the General Directorate of Taxation of Albania, was unintentionally communicated. Instead of a focused critique of potential tax evasion by short-term rental providers, the move highlighted a concerning financial trend within the albanian tourism sector. The data underscores the considerable reliance on external platforms and the relatively small amount of revenue directly benefiting property owners.

This situation necessitates a closer examination of the albanian tourism landscape and its economic impact.
