Waldyr Pereira, commonly known as “Didi,” passed away on May 12, 2001, at the age of 72. Born on October 8, 1928, Pereira originated from a modest family in Campos dos Goytacazes, a city located approximately 150 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro. His early life was marked by hard work; as a young boy, he assisted his family by selling sugarcane and frequently played football on the streets.

At the age of 14, Pereira experienced a serious setback when he almost lost his right leg due to a severe infection following an injury. Medical professionals initially considered amputation, but he successfully recovered. Remarkably, Pereira quickly resumed playing for local clubs, launching his professional career with Americano FC.

He gained significant recognition with Fluminense, and particularly distinguished himself with Botafogo, where he became one of the club’s most celebrated and historically important players. Pereira was widely recognized for his calm demeanor and refined playing technique during matches.
