Public Prosecutor Denies Pressure on Staff
Tirana – Head of the Public Basic Prosecution for the Tracking of Organized Crime and Corruption, Islam Abazi, addressed accusations of exerting influence over prosecutors today, asserting he has not applied any pressure or exerted influence on decisions made within the public prosecution service. Speaking at an informative meeting with journalists, Abazi responded directly to prior claims made by the Office of the State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption and Dissolution of Organized Crime (OBRM-PDUKM). The accusations centered around a purported “controversial order” issued by Abazi.
“Neither as a prosecutor nor as a senior prosecutor have I suggested any prosecutor, nor have I threatened his independence,” Abazi stated. “I have not exerted pressure or influence on any public prosecutor to make any decision.”
The statement follows a press conference earlier today delivered by Antonio Milloshoski from OBRM-PDUKM, who had previously assessed Abazi’s actions as problematic. Abazi’s response aims to clarify his role and responsibilities within the public system, emphasizing the independence of individual prosecutors.
The investigation into the allegations remains ongoing.
