VLEN Leader Advocates for Municipal Review in North Macedonia
Izet Mexhiti, leader of the VLEN party, has suggested a review of the current territorial structure within North Macedonia, specifically examining the effectiveness of existing municipalities. Speaking on “Top themes” on “TV Telma,” Mexhiti argued for a reassessment of the number of municipalities, currently standing at 80, following a reduction from 123. He contends that the previous number of municipalities was overly large and ineffective.
“North Macedonia should have 50 to 60 municipalities, which is a real number, real municipalities with real opportunities and potential,” Mexhiti stated. He referenced the historical context, noting that North Macedonia had 33 municipalities under communism, subsequently increasing to 123 and now 80. Mexhiti’s proposal encompasses all 80 municipalities, asserting that mayors across the region share similar challenges and demands.
He frames the restructuring as aligning with a European model, aiming to strengthen decentralization. The discussion centers on determining which municipalities are functioning effectively and which require adjustment. The goal is to establish a more sustainable and representative system, ensuring a real distribution of resources and governance across the country’s municipalities.
