Iranian Ambassador Receives High Papal Honor
Vatican City – Pope Leo XIV has bestowed the “Grand Cross of the Order of Piut IX” upon Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari, the Iranian ambassador to the Vatican, according to a certificate dated May 8th. This prestigious award represents one of the highest levels within the Order of Piut IX, a papal decoration established in 1847 by Pope Pius IX. The Order is primarily presented to prominent diplomats and heads of state today.
The certificate notes that such recognition is a customary practice within the Vatican, often extended to ambassadors residing in the city after approximately two years of service. Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari presented his credentials to Pope Francis in December 2023. The official certificate was signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State for the Vatican.
This honor reflects the ongoing diplomatic relationship between Iran and the Holy See. The presentation underscores the Vatican’s continued engagement with international relations and the importance placed on fostering dialogue through its diplomatic corps.
