Authorities Investigate SMS Scam Targeting Macedonian Citizens

The Ministry of Interior has announced an ongoing investigation into a series of SMS messages being sent to Macedonian citizens. Starting in recent days, individuals have been receiving communications from a phone number originating in the Philippines (+639606963624). These messages allege rule violations and subsequently request payments via a fraudulent website, http://mvr.govmk.cam/mk.

The Cyber Crime Sector of Byronë e Sigurisë Publike, in collaboration with the Cyber Security Department within the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications, confirmed the phenomenon. They stated that unknown actors are utilizing this foreign phone number to target Macedonian users with false accusations of violations, specifically related to trafficking. The messages instruct recipients to access the provided website to resolve the alleged issues and make payments using a credit or debit card.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise extreme caution and not respond to or provide any personal or financial information in response to these unsolicited communications. The Ministry is actively working to identify and address the source of these messages and is advising citizens to report any instances of receiving these suspicious communications. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the operation and protect citizens from potential fraud.
