Server: The risk in the north, Albania could take on more military responsibility in Kosovo

American professor and expert on the Balkans, Daniel Serwer, has advised that Kosovo must prepare for a potential reduction in the United States military presence in the region. Speaking in an interview with A2CNN, Serwer indicated that while an increase in the American troop presence would be welcomed, he does not view a partial withdrawal of forces as unexpected. “I would like to see more American troops in Kosovo and for them to stay, but I would also not be surprised if there were a withdrawal.

We must learn to live with this fact,” he stated. Serwer emphasized that the nation should proactively plan for a future scenario where the level of American involvement might decrease. He suggested that in such an event, regional allies would need to assume greater security responsibilities.

Specifically, he pointed to Albania, noting that as a member of NATO, the country could play an enhanced role in guaranteeing security within Kosovo. The expert’s comments underscore a need for Kosovo to build robust, self-sustaining security frameworks that are not solely reliant on foreign military guarantees. By preparing for diminished American support, the country can strengthen its institutional capacity and regional partnerships.

This forward-looking perspective suggests that stability in Kosovo will require a broader commitment from its immediate allies, solidifying the role of NATO members like Albania in maintaining regional peace and security structures.

  1. It sounds like the region is being pushed to assume greater security responsibilities moving forward.
