Jose Mourinho sued Turkey at the European Court of Human Rights

Jose Mourinho has initiated legal proceedings against Turkey before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), challenging disciplinary actions taken against him during his tenure as coach of Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. According to reports from Turkish media outlets, the Strasbourg-based court has accepted the lawsuit for review and has formally requested a response from the Turkish government. This governmental body has been granted a six-month deadline to submit its official statement.

The core of the dispute centers on penalties handed down to the Portuguese manager by the Professional Football Disciplinary Board (PFDK) of the Turkish Football Federation. These sanctions were issued following comments made by Jose Mourinho after a match played against Trabzonspor in November 2024. As a direct result of these remarks, mourinho faced disciplinary measures, including a suspension from the locker room and a substantial fine.

The legal challenge now before the ECHR seeks to review the legitimacy and fairness of these punitive actions. The filing marks a significant international legal development concerning sports governance and the rights of foreign coaches operating within Turkish football. The ECHR’s acceptance of the case indicates that the matter has progressed to a formal stage of judicial review.

The proceedings will now depend on the response provided by the Turkish authorities to the court.
