Former Minister of Finance, Xhevdet Hajredini, publicly criticized the Governor of the People’s Bank, Trajko Sllaveski, demanding immediate intervention to halt the rising fees imposed by commercial banks. Hajredini asserted that Sllaveski, in his capacity as a monetary authority, has constitutional duties that require decisive action. The comments followed a recent request made by the Governor of the National Bank of Macedonia, urging commercial institutions to curb what was described as an almost exponential increase in payment transaction fees affecting both the general public and the business community.
In a statement provided to “Lokal,” the former Minister emphasized that Sllaveski’s role is fundamentally monetary, and he should act according to his established competencies. Hajredini suggested that if the governor lacks the capability to manage this issue, his silence would be noted. He stressed that Sllaveski should not allow the situation to deteriorate due to inaction, arguing that his position must be upheld irrespective of political considerations.
The core of Hajredini’s critique centered on the perceived failure to regulate the banking sector’s fee structure. He maintained that the central bank governor must fulfill his mandated responsibilities. For Hajredini, the issue was one of regulatory enforcement, suggesting that the governor’s failure to intervene effectively undermines public trust and proper financial governance.
The former Minister concluded by reiterating that the appropriate response must be immediate and authoritative.
