Georgiev: I will suggest to Radev that he ask the EU to congratulate all the funds for North Macedonia

During a recent address delivered from the sidelines of the Bulgarian Parliament, deputy Angel Georgiev, representing the party “Rilindja,” commented on the incident involving the burning of diplomatic vehicles belonging to the Bulgarian embassy in Skopje. Georgiev stated that he intends to propose a measure to President Rumen Radev, suggesting that Bulgaria formally request the European Union to suspend all financial allocations directed toward North Macedonia. According to Georgiev, the proposed action would involve a direct appeal from President Radev to the EU to halt the flow of all European funds to the Republic of North Macedonia.

He argued that such a measure represented the only effective mechanism to compel tangible governmental reforms within the neighboring country. The deputy suggested that this proposal was rooted in the belief that North Macedonia currently lacks the demonstrated commitment necessary for substantial reform or successful integration with European Union standards. Georgiev’s comments highlighted a significant diplomatic divergence regarding regional stability and adherence to EU accession criteria.

The statement frames the withholding of financial aid not as punitive, but as a necessary catalyst for change. The proposal centers on using economic leverage to enforce structural adjustments, asserting that without such measures, previous promises of reform remain unfulfilled. The suggestion places the onus on the Bulgarian presidency to initiate this high-level negotiation with the EU institutions.
