The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the African Union’s health agency, has reported that the cumulative death toll from the ebola epidemic in the Congo has reached 202. This figure marks an increase in fatalities since the country declared a state of emergency one month ago. According to the agency’s data, since May 15, there have been 875 confirmed infections attributed to the virus.
The total number of recorded deaths stands at 202, resulting in a case fatality rate of 23%. The outbreak’s primary epicenter has been identified within the Ituri province in the northern regions of the DRC. The hemorrhagic fever currently affecting the area is linked to the Budibugyo strain.
Health officials have noted that, at present, there remains no vaccine or specific treatment available for this particular strain. The health crisis is not limited to the DRC. Neighboring Uganda has also reported activity, confirming 19 cases and two associated deaths.
The situation requires continued monitoring by regional health bodies. The statistics underscore the ongoing public health challenge posed by the virus across the region.
