BDI: The Tetova of the Albanians has its own history; it will not become the Tetova of Marshal Tito again

The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) has publicly responded to the recent changes involving the renaming of streets, squares, and avenues within Tetovo. BDI has accused the VLEN party of permitting the reintroduction of Yugoslav symbolism within the city’s public spaces. The party asserted that Tetovo possesses a distinct history, identity, and set of notable figures, and consequently, the renaming efforts represent an undesirable regression.

BDI argued that these changes erase the memory of names that citizens have long associated with the locality. The group’s full statement suggested that the justifications provided for altering the names of key urban areas are more revealing than any official declaration made by VLEN. BDI implied that the motivations behind these changes point to a nostalgic sentiment for figures such as Josip Broz Tito.

While acknowledging that some individuals may express admiration for Tito through poetry or public recognition, BDI framed the issue as one of fundamental conviction regarding the city’s historical narrative. The core concern articulated by BDI centers on preserving the established historical character of Tetovo against what they perceive as an unwarranted revisionism.
