13 dead in gas plant explosion in Qatar

An explosion occurred this evening at a major gas facility within the Ras Laffan Industrial City complex, which serves as Qatar’s primary site for the production and export of liquefied natural gas. According to Qatar’s Minister of Energy, Saad al-Kaabi, the incident resulted in injuries to 13 people. However, other reports indicate that 66 individuals were injured in the blast.

Minister al-Kaabi confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway. He emphasized that officials characterize the event as an accident, explicitly denying that the incident was related to any act of aggression or sabotage. Furthermore, the Minister stated that the facility’s export capabilities remain unaffected by the incident and pose no threat to the environment.

The Ras Laffan complex is crucial to Qatar’s energy sector. The facility has a history of facing external threats; specifically, it was previously struck by attacks originating from Iran earlier this year, during which time Qatar reported that 17% of its export capacity was destroyed. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the precise cause of the gas facility explosion.

Authorities are working to ensure that the disruption remains localized and that the critical infrastructure supporting the global supply of natural gas continues to operate normally.
