Will Cathcart has announced his departure from his leadership role at WhatsApp. Cathcart has managed the popular messaging platform for nearly seven years, during which time it expanded its private messaging features to a global user base exceeding three billion people. On Monday, Cathcart stated via social media posts that although the platform was at what he described as “its strongest point ever,” he felt it was the appropriate time for him to step down.
While Cathcart will remain employed within Meta’s broader leadership structure, Kunal Shah, the founder of the Indian fintech startup Cred, will assume responsibility for guiding WhatsApp going forward. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and CEO of Meta, publicly praised Shah, noting that Shah had created “one of the comp” [sic]. Cathcart’s tenure has been marked by significant growth for WhatsApp.
His leadership coincided with the platform’s massive global adoption, solidifying its position as a primary communication tool worldwide. The transition of leadership suggests a strategic shift in the management of the platform, placing the direction of WhatsApp under the purview of Kunal Shah. This change marks a notable transition for the messaging service, even as Cathcart continues to contribute to Meta’s executive team.
