Concerning, KOMF and Labyrinth: Drug use is increasing, while the age of onset is decreasing

On International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, KOMF and Labyrinth issued a joint call for immediate and coordinated action from responsible institutions. The statement emphasizes the urgent need to enhance protective measures for children and youth against the risks associated with narcotic substances. The organizations highlighted significant ongoing challenges within Kosovo regarding the prevention and treatment of minors affected by drug abuse.

According to the released statement, the scope of the issue is considerable, noting that the estimated total number of users in the country has surpassed 35,000 individuals. Furthermore, the data indicates that the proportion of child and adolescent users represents a growing concern year over year. Drawing upon data provided by Labyrinth, the statement points to a worrying trend regarding the age of initiation.

Specifically, the average age at which drug use begins has decreased substantially, falling from 18 years in 2018 to an average of 16 years in the most recent period documented. The joint appeal underscores that addressing this public health crisis requires a multi-sectoral response. KOMF and Labyrinth urge relevant bodies to collaborate on robust preventative programs, improved treatment facilities, and educational initiatives designed to mitigate the increasing vulnerability of young people to substance abuse.

The call stresses that proactive intervention is necessary to safeguard the welfare of the nation’s youth against the pervasive threat of illicit drugs.
