Montenegro arrests person wanted by the US for cybercrimes in favor of Iran

Montenegro police, collaborating with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, apprehended an Iranian-Turkish national on Friday in the coastal city of Kotor. The 39-year-old suspect, identified only by the initials AB, is currently wanted by a New York court in connection with significant cybercrime activities.

According to a statement released by the police, the man faces charges including computer fraud, hacking, identity theft, and organized crime. Montenegrin authorities alleged that the suspect has been conducting “massive hacking attacks” targeting American infrastructure since 2013. These alleged cyber operations reportedly affected over 150 universities, among other American institutions.

The charges stem from damages estimated by authorities to exceed $3.4 billion, which is equivalent to 2.98 billion euros. The investigation centers on data and accounts that were allegedly stolen through these sophisticated digital attacks. The joint operation underscores international law enforcement efforts to combat transnational cyber threats.

The arrest marks a significant development in the pursuit of individuals accused of large-scale technological fraud and espionage against U.S. interests. The suspect remains in custody pending further legal proceedings related to the charges for which he is wanted.
