To mark the 637th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, Professor Mentor Hasani and students from the Department of History at the University of Pristina hosted a commemorative event. The academic gathering took place outside the National Library of Kosovo and featured a special exhibition titled “One Battle, Many Questions.”
The historical event being commemorated occurred in the summer of 1389. The confrontation at Kosovo is recognized as one of the most significant military engagements of the Balkan Middle Ages.
It pitted the expanding forces of the Ottoman Empire against a substantial coalition of Balkan peoples, which included Albanians, Serbs, and Hungarians. The precise dating of the battle requires noting the difference between historical calendar systems. According to the Julian calendar, the date was June 15, while the internationally used Gregorian calendar marks the equivalent date as June 28.
The organized event aimed to facilitate scholarly discussion surrounding the enduring legacy of the battle. By presenting the exhibition, the organizers sought to encourage a deeper, multifaceted examination of the causes, participants, and long-term regional impact of the conflict. The commemoration thus served not only as a remembrance of the 1389 battle but also as a platform for ongoing historical inquiry into the complexities of the region’s past.
