“Vidovdani,” Serbs begin to gather at the Gračanica Monastery

Serbian citizens gathered at the courtyard of the Gračanica Monastery beginning at 8:00 AM to observe the commemoration of the festival known as “Vidovdan.” Services are anticipated to take place at the site, where attendees have been seen lining up near portraits of Jesus Christ and Saint Mary, engaging in prayer accompanied by Serbian music. Kosovo Police forces are stationed at the monastery’s entrance to ensure the safety of the gathering, and the number of participating citizens continues to increase. The date, September 28, holds historical significance as it marks the Battle of Kosovo.

This battle is remembered for the losses sustained by a coalition of Balkan peoples against the Ottoman Empire. Following this conflict, the peoples of the Balkans faced conquest by the Ottomans or were compelled into vassal status under the sultanate. Albanian princes also continued to fight during this period but were ultimately defeated.

The gathering at the Serbian monastery serves as a focal point for remembering these historical events. The presence of the citizens underscores the cultural and historical importance of the location for the Serbian community. Security measures are in place to manage the large turnout of participants as the day progresses.
