Serbs depart from the north to celebrate “Vidovdan.”

Hundreds of Serbs recently organized a departure from the North Mitrovica commune to commemorate the day known as “Vidovdan.” The group traveled by bus to Gračanica, where a religious mass is scheduled, before proceeding to Gazemestan, near the Obelisk. This location has historically been the site where the Serbs gather to celebrate Vidovdan. Vidovdan marks the anniversary of a significant military engagement, which historical accounts describe as a pivotal defeat for the coalition of Balkan peoples opposing the Ottoman Empire.

According to the commemoration, the battle fought on September 28 marked a turning point when the Balkan populations faced overwhelming forces. Following this defeat, the regions were reportedly either brought under Ottoman control or forced into vassalage to the sultan, although resistance continued among Albanian princes. The gathering serves as an occasion for the Serbs to celebrate this memory.

For this event, the procession was accompanied by personnel from the Kosovo Police and KFOR. The commemoration underscores the historical and cultural importance of the date for the community. The organized movement reflects a pattern of gathering at key historical sites to observe and remember the events associated with Vidovdan.
