The fate of the Trebenište–Qafë Thanë axis is set in April at the UNESCO meeting in South Korea

The ultimate determination regarding the infrastructure corridor connecting Trebenište and Qafë Thanë is scheduled for April during the annual UNESCO meeting in South Korea, where the comprehensive report concerning the Ohrid Region will undergo review. Addressing the matter, the Minister of Transport for “Alsat,” Aleksandar Nikolloski, indicated that the necessity of constructing a highway toward Qafë Thanë and Albania is no longer disputed. Instead, the current focus has narrowed to selecting the precise route for the development.

These statements follow a preparatory closed-door meeting held recently in Ohrid. During this session, ministers, alongside the mayors of Struga and Ohrid, engaged with 15 ambassadors representing various UNESCO member states. The delegation conducted site visits, inspecting the construction progress at the “Bechtel & Enka” camp, and specifically surveyed the potential path along the Trebenište – Qafë Thanë corridor.

The preliminary assessment following these visits was positive, suggesting favorable initial impressions regarding the project’s viability. The outcome of the upcoming UNESCO review is expected to solidify the fate of this vital regional link. Officials stated that while the groundwork and preliminary discussions are encouraging, the final determination remains contingent upon the findings presented in the official report.
