During its 109th session, the Parliament of North Macedonia addressed several key legislative and administrative matters, resulting in the passage of a new statute and the continuation of existing emergency measures. Procedurally, the session also saw the election of Kristina Sofronijuska to the role of Deputy Secretary-General of the Legislative Chamber. A central item of business was the comprehensive new law on Gambling and Amusement Games.
Following a vote of 60 in favor and 20 against, the legislation was officially approved. Deputy Minister of Finance Nikolçe Jankulovski provided details regarding the law’s provisions, noting significant regulatory changes intended to protect public safety. Under the new framework, the law mandates that any facilities organizing gambling games must maintain a minimum distance of 500 meters from primary and secondary schools, measured along the safest pedestrian route.
Furthermore, the legislation significantly restricts promotional activities for casinos and betting points. Specifically, illuminated advertisements will be prohibited; only a sign displaying the establishment’s name will be permitted. In addition to the passage of the gaming law, the Parliament also voted to extend the state of emergency in a specified area of the country’s territory.
These actions represent a multi-faceted legislative session, covering public safety regulations, economic oversight, and institutional governance.
