The northern parliament regrets “I Love Mitrovica,” votes not to remove it

The Communal Council of North Mitrovica has officially annulled a prior decision concerning the removal of the “I Love Mitrovica” mural. The reversal followed a directive from the Ministry of Local Government, which declared the decision made during the previous session, dated May 25, 2026, invalid and subject to annulment. The council passed the annulment with 14 favorable votes and zero dissenting votes.

Mayor Milan Radojeviq commented on the incident, suggesting that the Ministry of Local Government is applying inconsistent standards. He noted that the ministry’s actions contrast with previous instances. Specifically, Radojeviq pointed out that the ministry had not treated similarly the decision when the former leadership, under Mayor Erden Atiq, sought to include North Mitrovica in the Association of Kosovo Municipalities.

At that time, the ministry was reportedly supportive, having fully empowered the council. However, the current decision regarding the “I Love Mitrovica” mural is now being labeled as “illegal.”

This development highlights a perceived inconsistency in the administrative oversight concerning the city of Mitrovica. The swift annulment of the mural removal decision, despite the council’s initial vote, has drawn attention to the differing standards applied by the Ministry of Local Government across various local governance issues.
