Ajvazi shows why it is becoming increasingly expensive to produce in Kosovo

Local producers operating within Kosovo are reportedly confronting a confluence of challenges that are negatively impacting the sector’s overall competitiveness. These difficulties span multiple operational areas, including the complexities of integrating into the free electricity market, escalating production costs, persistent labor shortages, and legislative changes that, according to industry representatives, are frequently enacted without prior consultation with the business community. Kushtrim Ajvazi, the head of the Kosovo Producers Association (OEK), detailed these mounting pressures during an appearance on the “Përballje Podcast.” Ajvazi stated that the production sector has experienced continuous strain in recent years.

A primary concern highlighted was the transition of businesses into the free electricity market. Producers, he noted, had previously requested a dedicated transition period and formal consultation with relevant governmental institutions to manage this shift effectively. The difficulties surrounding energy market integration were emphasized, suggesting that the rapid shift required adaptation that the industry felt was not adequately supported by procedural timelines or advisory engagement.

Furthermore, the association pointed to the cumulative effect of rising input costs alongside legislative adjustments as key headwinds. These combined factors, Ajvazi argued, are creating an environment of sustained operational strain for the local producers, necessitating systemic review to ensure the sustained viability of the manufacturing base in Kosovo.
