Haxhiu: The republic honors February 2nd for defending its sovereignty in every corner

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, along with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti and acting Deputy Minister and Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, held a discussion with delegates from the former Parliament. The meeting centered on commemorating the 36th anniversary of the Constitution Declaration, which occurred on February 2nd. During the event, Haxhiu addressed the historical context of the date.

She recounted that on February 2, 1990, access to the Parliament was reportedly restricted for the delegates of Kosovo. According to statements made by the President, the day was characterized by closed doors and the presence of police forces near the legislative building. Haxhiu asserted that the situation suggested an attempt by a governing power—following the granting of autonomy to Kosovo—to diminish the nation’s political representation.

However, she emphasized the source of legitimacy for the political body. Haxhiu stated that the mandate originates directly from the people, citing the actions of the delegates that day as evidence. She noted that the delegates demonstrated their commitment to Kosovo’s voice by addressing the public and continuing their work outside the physical confines of the hall.

The gathering served as a platform for reflection on the constitutional milestones of Kosovo. The participation of the Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, alongside the President, highlighted the institutional recognition of the historical significance of the February date for the nation’s political development.
