The announcement of the verdict for four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in the Specialist Chambers for Kosovo has been postponed, leading to concerns regarding adherence to human rights standards. While the Specialist Courts cited the sheer volume and complexity of the evidence as justification for the delay, defense counsel argue the postponement is unwarranted. The Specialist Chambers for Kosovo confirmed that the verdict for Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi would now be announced on September 16.
The Trial Panel stated that the extension was necessary due to the extensive evidence, which includes 29,238 pages of transcripts and testimony from 270 witnesses. The court asserted that this extended time was required to ensure a reasoned and comprehensive assessment of the material, and that the court recess did not impact the setting of the new date. Conversely, legal representatives for the former KLA leaders contested the delay, arguing that the panel had sufficient time to reach a decision.
One lawyer contended that the principle of trial within a reasonable time has been violated. Furthermore, another lawyer suggested that if the Court intended to demonstrate full adherence to law, it should review the continued detention measures for the defendants. The former leaders face accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity and have been held in pre-trial detention since 2020.
During closing arguments, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office requested sentences of 45 years in prison for the four individuals, while the defense lawyers advocated for their release.
