Swedish defense firm Saab has secured a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Agency (FMV) for the supply of 16 JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets destined for Ukraine. The comprehensive agreement, estimated to be valued at around 2.7 billion euros, encompasses not only the new aircraft but also necessary spare parts, software upgrades, logistical support, and armament. Public reports indicate that Saab received this order directly from the Swedish government.
However, it remains unconfirmed whether Kyiv has entered into a separate agreement with FMV for the procurement of these specific aircraft. Furthermore, the terms suggest that alongside the 16 new Gripen E jets, Ukraine is also slated to receive one used Gripen C/D jet for every new aircraft delivered. The commitment underscores the continued military support flowing from Sweden.
Speaking on the matter, the Swedish Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, emphasized that Ukraine’s overarching objective is to establish a fully self-sufficient air force capability. The provision of the advanced Gripen platform represents a significant infusion of modern aerial defense technology to Ukraine. This substantial contract highlights the depth of defense cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine, ensuring that the recipient nation can bolster its air defenses with sophisticated, modern Swedish-made weaponry.
