Farmer protests by taking milk in Bistrica, KRU “Gjakova” warns of lawsuit

The Regional Water Supply Company “Gjakova” has announced plans to initiate legal action against a citizen who posted videos and photos on Facebook depicting the act of releasing milk into the Bistrica river. The company stated that the individual, identified as a farmer, is suspected of contaminating the Bistricë river, which serves as a source for the Radoniq Lake supply channel. According to “Gjakova,” expert assessments indicate that the introduction of milk into the water source poses significant risks to the aquatic environment.

The company’s announcement detailed several scientific concerns associated with this contamination. Specifically, the presence of milk increases the organic load within the water body. Experts noted that this contamination stimulates the multiplication of bacteria, leading to increased water turbidity and higher oxygen consumption levels.

Furthermore, the introduction of milk can elevate the required dosage of chlorine during the disinfection process. Critically, it may also promote the formation of trihalomethanes (THM), a substance of concern in treated water. In response to this pollution, “Gjakova” is taking legal measures to address the unauthorized discharge of milk into the river system.

The company emphasizes that maintaining the quality of the water supply is paramount, making the contamination from milk a serious environmental and public health issue.
