US reacts to Iran’s claims of controlling ‘golden weapon’

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement addressing recent claims made by Iran concerning the critical maritime chokepoint of the Strait of Hormuz. The assertion came amid heightened regional tensions, following reports of recent explosions in the area.

An Iranian source had previously characterized the Strait as an economic asset, referring to it as the nation’s “golden weapon” and suggesting it represented a major global economic resource. This source implied that Iran’s control over the waterway was a strategic point of contention with the United States. The Iranian reports suggested that the country might once again threaten to restrict passage through the strait following recent U.S.

military activities. In direct response, CENTCOM refuted the premise that Iran maintains unilateral control over the waterway. The command stated explicitly that such control does not exist.

CENTCOM provided data to counter the claims, noting the sustained international passage through the strait. The statement highlighted that since the beginning of May, U.S. forces have actively supported the safe transit of over 800 commercial vessels, facilitating the passage of an estimated 380 million barrels of oil.

The official rebuttal served to clarify the operational status of the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the ongoing international movement of commerce despite the geopolitical disputes involving Iran.
