Even a municipality in Montenegro questions the recognition of Kosovo’s independence

An extraordinary session of the Municipal Council of Pljevlja, Montenegro, is scheduled for November 21, during which councilors are set to review a draft declaration concerning the status of Kosovo. The initiative was put forward by members of the “For the Future of Pljevlja” coalition, a group that includes representatives from the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) and the New Serbian Democracy (NSD). According to available reports, the proposed declaration has garnered support from nineteen local parliament councilors.

If approved by the council, the document would constitute an official statement from the Municipal Council of Pljevlja expressing its disagreement with the 2008 decision made by the Montenegrin Government that granted recognition to Kosovo as an independent state. This proposed declaration represents a significant formal statement from a local governmental body within Montenegro regarding international recognition. The proceedings are expected to focus on the formal adoption of this stance by the councilors.

The initiative seeks to record the municipality’s position against the earlier governmental act of recognition. The scheduled session will therefore serve as a forum for the councilors to debate and vote on the declaration, which would officially document the municipality’s rejection of the prior recognition status of Kosovo by the Montenegrin state.
