Physical eye injuries remain a significant health concern affecting both young people and individuals employed in various physical professions. Addressing this issue, ophthalmologist and eye surgeon Naser Salihu discussed the prevalence of these injuries on the “Health First” podcast, which was supported by United Hospital. According to Dr.
Salihu, physical eye injuries are a frequently encountered problem among the youth population in Kosovo. He emphasized that many of these incidents are preventable through targeted education and the consistent use of appropriate protective equipment in the workplace. During his professional experience across various locations throughout Europe, Dr.
Salihu observed a noticeable difference in incidence rates. He noted that the frequency of eye injuries in his European postings was substantially lower compared to what he observed in Kosovo, an observation that was particularly pronounced during the summer months. This disparity suggests a strong correlation between workplace safety standards, adherence to protective measures, and the incidence of ocular trauma.
The expert stressed that while the risk remains high, proactive measures focusing on preventative education are crucial for mitigating harm. Implementing robust safety protocols and ensuring that protective gear is used correctly are key strategies for reducing the number of severe eye injuries within the community. These preventative measures are vital for safeguarding the vision of young workers and those in physically demanding roles.
