“No one wants to touch the dead”: Over 5,000 people died in the tremors in Venezuela

Three weeks following the seismic activity that impacted Venezuela’s coastal state of La Guaira, the humanitarian crisis remains severe. According to updated data released by Jorge Rodríguez, President of the National Assembly, the cumulative death toll from the two major earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, is reported to be at least 5,069. In addition to the fatalities, the disaster has resulted in injuries to over 16,700 people.

The scale of the loss of life is compounded by the missing persons count, with the United Nations estimating that the number of unaccounted-for individuals could reach as high as 50,000. The infrastructure damage is extensive, with hundreds of buildings either destroyed or sustaining severe structural damage. This has left an estimated 20,000 people displaced and without permanent shelter.

Many of these individuals are currently residing in temporary, improvised encampments established in public squares, stadiums, and along sidewalks. Amid the ongoing search efforts, families continue to search for loved ones trapped beneath the rubble. Reports indicate that many of these searches are occurring without adequate assistance from official authorities.

The combination of massive displacement and the high number of people who have died has created a critical need for sustained international and domestic aid.
