Indonesia records over 2,000 aftershock tremors following the deadly weekend earthquake

Indonesia has experienced persistent and intense seismic activity following a major earthquake on Saturday. Local media reports indicate that the nation has recorded a total of 2,119 aftershocks since the initial magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics has advised that this sequence of tremors could continue for an additional three to four weeks.

The recorded aftershocks span a range of magnitudes, from 1.3 to 6.2. According to the director of the earthquake and tsunami agency, Wijayanto, there have been 24 aftershocks measuring over magnitude 5, and 70 of these seismic events were felt by local residents. The initial magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in East Nusa Tenggara, an area that includes the tourist destination of Labuan Bajo, and resulted in reported damage.

The continuous nature of the aftershocks poses ongoing concerns for the population. Authorities continue to monitor the seismic situation across Indonesia as the region remains susceptible to further tremors. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow the guidance issued by geological monitoring agencies regarding safety protocols during periods of heightened seismic activity.
